Wind Creek Funds The Fight Against Childhood Cancer
The Denver Shuttlesworth Memorial Kicking for a Cure Kickball Tournament raised over $2500 to help those who are fighting cancer. Thank you to all who came out and supported.
ATMORE, Ala. (10/30/2018) -- The American Cancer Society estimates 10,590 children under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2018. This statistic hit close to home in September when 19-year-old Poarch Band of Creek Indians (PCI) Tribal member, Denver Shuttlesworth lost his years-long battle with cancer. In honor of Denver, and in support of those still in the trenches, Wind Creek Hospitality (WCH) joined the fight by raising funds for Pilots for Christ and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Both of these organizations were invaluable in Denver’s fight against cancer and the fights of many others struggling with long-term illness. Frequent travel for doctor’s appointments or treatments can be exhausting and expensive. Pilots for Christ takes away the burdens of expensive travel by providing air transportation at no cost to families who are already fighting for life. In similar fashion, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital provides life-changing cancer treatments and research to all patients regardless of race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.
WCH’s efforts to raise awareness and funds took place during September and October, beginning with a company-wide campaign called Join the Fight. The campaign promised that for every guest to visit a Wind Creek property on September 28th, one dollar would be added to a fund for Pilots for Christ and St. Jude. Nearly 24,000 guests and community members participated in the campaign. Thanks to their support, WCH was able to make a total donation of $30,370.
Adding to the success of Join the Fight, WCH was excited to host its third annual Kickin’ For A Cure kickball tournament. For the past two years, the tournament benefited breast cancer awareness and research. This year, it benefited Pilots for Christ. The tournament was hosted at Arrowhead Park in Poarch, Ala. Complete with concession sales and bleachers full of fans, it was a night of fun-raising and fund-raising. It was the largest event to date, with 13 teams competing from 4:00pm on October 16th until 2:00am on October 17th! In total, the tournament raised $2,500 for a great cause. These efforts raised a combined $32,870 to fund important services, healthcare and research related to ending childhood cancer.
